Is MasterClass worth it? I decided to write this MasterClass review after watching a couple of classes that the site had to offer. MasterClass is a website that offers video classes of celebrities talking about their domain of expertise. It features classes such as “Ramsey Gordon Teaches Cooking”, “Martin Scorsese Teaches Filmmaking”, “Marc Jacobs Teaches Fashion Design”, and lots more…
A single class costs $90, and an all-access pass that allows you to watch all the classes costs $180, and grants you another free account that you can give to a friend.
We watched a few of those classes, and here’s what we think:
- Slightly Misleading Name
While the topics and celebrities were super interesting, the videos are not really highly educational classes… definitely not “master classes” as the name suggests. As a viewer, I was expecting a “masterclass” and was expecting to learn more about the discussed topics.
- More of Interviews Than Classes
The videos are more of interviews of how these celebrities made it and comments on some of their previous works. The celebrities share their stories or some of their experiences.
- Not Everyone Can Teach
The featured celebrities are great at what they do, but they’re not necessarily good teachers.
- Focus is on the Celebrities
The celebrities are the focus, not the topic. The videos might serve as a vague overview about the domain of work, not an in-depth one.
- Valuable Content vs Video Length
You might get just 2 or 3 small golden nuggets from each class, which is not worth the time spent watching, because each class is 2 hours or longer.
- Interesting Stories
Some celebrities have interesting stories.
- High Production Quality
The quality of production is quite high and enjoyable.
- Overall Rating
I’d give most of the classes a rating of 3-3.8 over 5.
Verdict: Is MasterClass worth it?
Not really, because the it’s quite expensive for what they’re offering. If you’re interested in learning about a certain topic, I recommend other tutorial and learning sites such as LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Coursera, or even YouTube. However, if you’re just interested in learning more about your favorite celebrity, then MasterClass is for you.
